A Werewolf Song inspired by Blood and Chocolate!

Well, the fact that Craig Robertson commented on my last post and tipped me off to a great movie reminded me to get my butt in gear and tell you about the wonderful song he sent me a few weeks ago called "Werewolf Country". It will be on his next CD due out in the summer of 2009. He composed the song after his 12 year-old daughter convinced him to read Blood and Chocolate. I was blown away that someone would be inspired to write a song because of the book, and very impressed with a father who shares his daughter's reading experiences with enthusiasm. The song is catchy and right on the mark, although I have to say I would have never linked werewolves and ukuleles in the same thought stream before this. LOL
Apparently there is a whole ukulele movement that I was unaware of which has enlightened me as to how cool and diverse ukulele music can be. Check out Ukulele Noir.

See the Movie that Inspired the Book

One of the many things that inspired me to write Freaks: Alive, on the Inside! was the 1933 movie Freaks directed by Tod Browning. I've just found the whole movie on line! Now you can see it.

ALA Here I Come

Well, I'm all set to go to the American Library Association annual conference in Anaheim, California. I'll be wearing two hats: one as author and the other as librarian. I'll be taking advantage of the educational programming as well as wandering around the exhibits looking at all the new books. I expect I'll be there for the Newbery and Caldecott speeches and I'm hoping to attend the Prinz Award reception, too. So, if you're going to be at ALA, look for me there.

Our Lily is a Star part 1

Usually I am the only family member who has her name in a book, but not this month.

A while back now, my husband encouraged me to enter our three-legged Siamese cat in a Web competition run by Mutts comics. People were asked to submit the rescue stories of their pets to be considered for inclusion in a collection of Shelter Stories by cartoonist Patrick McDonnell. Well, MUTTS Shelter Stories: Love. Guaranteed. is now out--and there's our Lily on page ninety-four! Her picture kicks off a section of cartoon strips about Eddie-Do, a three-legged cat.

They used a paragraph from the entry I sent in, but didn't mention that she found her forever home with us through Siamese Rescue, so I thought I'd let you know here.

My husband and I are thrilled that Lily was included, especially since this wonderful book promotes animal rescue and adoption. Lily seems rather nonchalant, however. She's sleeping in front of my monitor right now, totally oblivious to her new-found fame.
